In this episode of The Sacred Speaks, host John Price sits down with Sarah Janes — dream historian, retreat leader, and author of Initiation into Dream Mysteries: Drinking from the Pool of Mnemosyne — for a wide-ranging conversation on ancient dreaming traditions, the sacred sleep temples of the ancient world, and what it might mean to take dreams seriously again as initiatory encounters rather than psychological byproducts.
Sarah traces her lifelong relationship with dreams: childhood lucid dreaming, vivid water-of-life dreams, and an encounter with lucid dreaming teacher Clare Johnson in Delphi, a meeting foreshadowed in a dream years before it happened. From there the conversation moves into the Asclepian healing sanctuaries, where the sick came not for a diagnosis but for a night in the abaton, the sacred sleep chamber, where the god might arrive in the dark to teach or operate. The medicine was the dream. And sometimes, under anesthetics of mandrake and wine, surgery followed. The divine and the clinical were not in opposition at Epidaurus. They worked from the same ground.
John and Sarah explore the ancient taxonomy of true and deceptive dreams, the gates of horn and ivory, and the embodied practices, dream circles, art, reenactment, theater, that Sarah uses to help contemporary people inhabit their dreams rather than decode them. They move into the herbs and scents that ancient dreamers used to thin the membrane before sleep, the underworld figures of Mnemosyne and Lethe, and what it means to drink from remembrance before you return. And they take up the Eleusinian question: were the Mysteries primarily a psychedelic experience? Sarah is skeptical. The argument is careful and earns its ground.
What did we lose when dreaming became private, unwitnessed, a problem of sleep hygiene rather than a practice of initiation? And what are the stakes of a dream life taken as its own form of knowing, the primary language of soul?
Sarah shares details about her upcoming Greece retreats, including the Songlines of Sleep and the Oracle Dream Retreat.
